After further consideration, I think I will make a better investment.  Maybe I'll wait until I get my REI dividend and coupon next year.  Thanks, everyone, for the input, and don't hesitate to send more if you have it.
As a matter of fact, I _do_ have an opinion on that....

You could always purchase now, help out the economy, and increase your REI dividend for next year - then you'd have more money to spend on something else.  Always happy to help you spend your hard earned money and help out the economy at the same time :!:

Thank you _so_ much, Shane!  :)  This month, I am helping the economy by paying college application fees.  (Where's the choking emoticon?)

I've never understood "application fees" at universities/colleges, etc.  It's part of the "cost of doing business".  Hey, there is an idea   companies can fatten up the bottom line by having an "application fee" when you apply for a job.  Pay a fee to submit your resume    They can just post bogus jobs with no intentions of hiring anyone and rake in the money.  It's like the "oil/battery/tire" disposal fee or all the fees on your cell phone/land line, cost of paying your insurance monthly - a handling fee, etc. - I learned in the little accounting that I took that "it's the cost of doing business".  Maybe autodealers can charge you to test drive cars - a "test drive fee".  Of course, Casa Grande could charge us a use service fee by post    on bigbendchat.

One of the nice things about REI is that they'll let you set up the tent in the store to check it out (besides the rebate and 20% coupon). This I would recommend. Set up several tents, check out the available sleep space and layout, crawl inside, see where all the guy lines connect, check zippers and doors, etc. For each one, review their advertised square footage and weight. This will help really help when it comes down to making a decision.

Decide if you want one door or two, is the door on the front or on the side, does the door lay on the ground when unzipped or can it be stowed to the side, is the vestibule actually useable, freestanding or not, etc.

Or just call up Mr. Smith and have him dispatch a jet to take you to LaHideous.

No thank you.  IF I had $1.4 mil, I sure as hell wouldn't spend it on a motorcoach.  Nor would I ask Steve Smith for anything.

Maybe a horse to help me make it up Pinnacles, now that would be a useful investment.

REI Half Dome acquired on sale + a little extra jiggering on the floor sample...$116.99.  Now I just need to break it in.  It's lovely.  I set it up in the den last night and played "camping" for a little bit.  Yes, my mind is going, rapidly.

Shane, I helped the economy and thought of you while I was doing it.
