R2D2 Modifications for an Outside Sink...
« on: September 17, 2006, 10:01:38 PM »
My hiking / camping buddy Matt made a great suggestion to me that I implemented today.  My #1 problem with the R2D2 - AKA Pop-Up Camper when camped where critters are a problem, especially when I have access to black/gray water connections is that I really had no way of
cleaning dishes.  This was somewhat of an inconvenience when I was volunteering for BIBE and BBNHA recently and was camped at PJ#1.  With all the critters running around, I didn't want to clean the dishes and dump the "stuff" on the ground.  Can't really use the sink in the R2D2 as it has a pretty small outlet hose and didn't want to clog it up.  I needed to figure out a way of having a "wash sink".  These last trips I used virtually no cooking implments and didn't use any pans as I didn't want to have to hassle with cleaning them.  On the first trip to BIBE PJ#1 I'd go up to the basin to wash dishes at the restroom - they have a sink for washing dishes - but it was a "hassle".  Turns out, I had the solution right at home already.  I'd purchased a sink/table setup from REI several years ago while I was still tent camping, but had pretty much quit using it with the advent of R2D2.  Here is the sink from REI - NOTE:  I got it on sale for about $100.  All I had to do was do a $3 modification to my existing gray water plumbing system and wa-la - I've now got an outdoor sink.  I'll use the outdoor shower for hot/cold water at the sink.

They also make an additional add-on piece that can even give you more room so that you can configure it in multiple ways.

NOTE:  This table and stuff is from http://www.gsioutdoors.com/products.html and they have some other neat camping things that I'm sure you just really need.

I took some additional pics for those with pop-up campers on how I plumbed all of it.

Your rig is very cool.
I take it you changed out the stock tires and wheels, too?

Very neat.
That sink would come handy for fishing too.
