Sounds like she needed a PLB or a sat phone.  I don't know about anyone else, but I put together a detailed pre trip plan that I distribute to a number of people and anytime I'm near a phone or have cell service I "check in" - often times with just an IM from the cell phone giving the code word "All is Well".  I've found that with a single bar I can still IM even when voice would be difficult.  I've got quite a few email addressed stored on my phone  too.  Any major change of plans I communicate to a number of people too.  Of course, I'm pretty anal about things when it comes to planning.  My cell phone is chocked full of important phone numbers for DPS, various government agencies, BIBE numbers, sherriff dept. numbers, etc.
