Showers
« on: August 02, 2009, 05:08:56 PM »
Something I learned while in Colorado recently :icon_lol: is that you can stop at KOA campgrounds, pay something like $5 and take a nice hot shower. What a deal.  I'd never been inside a KOA campground before. Not that I'd want to stay there, but the shower was sure nice. Seems like a lot of $ until you consider how great it feels to get several days of grime off of you. Stillwell's down towards Black Gap WMA charges something like $5 with a towel.  Sometimes the other alternative would be a day pass/entrance fee at a state park. Gunnison KOA  There is one out at Van Horn - not that it would do me much good.  I thought there used to be one around Fort Stockton?  There are some out at San Angelo, Kerrville, Abilene, Junction, etc.

In fact, the Yellow Pages list one in Fort Stockton,  but the KOA site does not.  Even has a road named after it...

Fort Stockton RV Park
3604 KOA RD
Fort Stockton, TX 79735

Maybe this is it - http://www.fortstocktonrvpark.com/

Heck, may RV park would let you stop and take a shower there.

Thanks for that tip, Shane!  $5 doesn't sound so bad as a 10 hour drive back home smelling like an old gym sock!  :)

I believe a lot of RV parks will sell you a shower. Just stop and ask. Also a good spot is a municipal swimming pool, but might cost a few dollars more for the use of the facility. A good imagination helps! Here is a plug: Steamboat Springs, CO has a great facility!

I have been to the KOA Campground in San Antonio, showers are nice there.

For showering options in Big Bend, which i happened to agree it is always welcomed after 2-4 days of grime are:
* Seminole Canyon S.P.: Great showers there,i have tried them myself.Lots of hot water and very clean toliets.EXCELLENT!!...might want to check out the museum, while there.
* All the RV Parks in Amistad Lake in Del Rio, I assure  you will find one who will sell you a shower, almost all of them do.
* in Del Rio,along Ave. F. ( main ave.) you should find more in the truck stops.
* Shell Gas station on the outskirts of Eagle Pass,Tx. Nice showers there too, never tried them.
* Municipal pool in Eagle Pass, $2.00 dlls entrance fee, cheap!.

Any one else want to chime in?.

Beat me to it, most of the modern truck stops have nice facilities, some are reserved for professional drivers, but not all.  :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap:

I've been showering on the road since the early 80s and have found that some KOAs welcome walk-up showerers while others reserve them only for folks who stay there. I'll second the suggestion for truck stops - some of these are pretty nice.

reserved for professional drivers,

 :offtopic:

What pretel is a "professional driver"?  I've got more miles under my belt than I care to think about, am I not a professional driver?  I don't think just because you drive a rig for a living you are a professional driver as I've seen some pretty "unprofessional" drivers out there on the open road.  Is there a certain "league" for drivers?  Minors/Majors - like in MLB.   :icon_wink:

Regular showers are great, but it is easy to sponge wash with a gallon or two of water to extend time between showers comfortably.

This stuff works great on dirty hair and helps relieve an itchy scalp without water. A hand towels work great to complete the cleaning process.

The park has faucets to fill containers including 5-gallon containers at the PJ and RGV ranger stations to provide plenty of water to clean yourself and indefinitely extend your stay in the back country, particularly when combined with judicious use of baby wipes.

Don't consider yourself to be one with desert unless you use unscented . . .

And then there is this stuff.  I have never used it, but if it is used by NASA on all space shuttle flights, it has to be out of this world!

Actually, I'm pretty light tonight - and stone cold sober - I was just making a "funny" Homero - but thanks, it is well past my bedtime.  Time to count sheep...

Just quoting the sign in the truck stop up the road from me, if you don't drive a big rig for a living they don't wish you to use their showers, just a term.  I was just passing shower information along, stop or don't no smell for my nose.

Professional truck drivers have a CDL.  I had one for a couple of years but stopped getting paid for my driving.  I also have a lot of miles on me :icon_lol:

Next week we're heading to Big Bend with a device we're going to try... a propane shower! We'll set up a tarp as a screen and shower in our own camp.
