Successful Tune Up Trip
« on: March 11, 2009, 11:02:47 PM »
Went to Enchanted Rock State Natural Area last weekend to try out the new pack, shoes, sleeping bag and tent before heading to BB on the 28th of this month. The new equipment did well!

The shoes (Merrell Merrell Moab GORE-TEX XCR) had already been broken in on the treadmill and around town but I hadn't carried any pack weight with them on. Did just fine for low cut trail shoes.

The pack (GoLite Quest) was very comfortable but I was only carrying 30 pounds. Hopefully it will still be okay with 35-40 pounds on the Marufo Vega hike.

The sleeping bag (North Face Blaze 20°) was okay but it only got down to 67° Saturday night. I didn't have to snuggle up in it due to the mild temps so I really can't say if it will be warm enough for me when the temp is around 40-50°. It packs down small enough in a compression stuff sack that it's fairly easy to carry.

The tent (Big Agnes Seedhouse 2 SL) is wonderful! If two people use this tent, they had better be really close because they will be...really close. For one person it's perfect! I almost bought a Seedhouse 1 and I'm glad I didn't. It would have been too small for me.

In all I hiked about 4 miles going in to the camp site and then around ER on the way out and I had no problems at all. I'm hoping it goes as well in a couple of weeks when I'm hiking to the Split Rock camp site!

Thanks for the report SA Bill.

I need to get a different sleeping bag, so I'm looking forward to more of your on-site testing before I buy.
