Torres del Paine, Chile - anyone been?
« on: November 21, 2014, 09:03:43 AM »
I swear I saw someone mention it in a thread and I meant to ask them about it, but now I can't find the thread or remember who it was.

So if you've been to Torres del Paine or know someone who has, I'd love to hear from you!

Ask the same question on 14ers.com and you will likely get a hundred responses.  Many top Andes climbers frequent that site

I've had this bookmarked for my bucket list. I never get tired of reading this trip report. Looks like you may get there first.

My backpacking compadre did pretty near this same trip about 6-7 years ago.  His advice was to invest heavily in foul weather gear and a good tent.

Thanks Quatro!  Aiming for this March.  Was planning on the O circuit, but this trip report and another one I found have me looking pretty seriously at the W + El Chalten.  If only I had a couple months to spend!

We are looking at going at the end of September into October. I have read all I can and asked all I can but due to work can't go later in the year and time off changes the following year so can't afford to loose it.

I went to Torres del Paine in 2002.  Otherworldly scenery, as you can see on the internet.  We walked the O circuit all the way around after first doing a day hike up Rio Asensio to the Torres.  We had an outfitter, so we took all our own food and had gauchos haul the heavy loads as far as Lago Dickson.  We were out six nights on the circuit, two nights camped at Hosteria del Torres before, one night at hotel Pehoe after.  We had ice gear and spent the last circuit night on Glaciar Grey.  There are refugios at the camp spots that sell food and maybe lodging in some cases.  We mainly bought boxes of Gato Negro wine from them.  I think we went if February.  Wet and chilly.  Lots of visitors there.

Thanks all for the replies.  Looks like we'll need to delay a bit (pesky joints), but lots of good leads for research, so much appreciated!
