I carry one large platypus in my pack and a 32 oz nalgene bottle in each holster on my pack, for easy drinks.  We stop and refill the nalgene bottles at every opportunity, keeping them topped off when possible. I've always disliked the bite-valve tubes.

We also carry another plastic canteen filled with tequila.  The following picture was a taste-test of three fine tequilas.  Apparently the Antigua Cruz was winning.

i use the knock off nalgenes from Academy. $2.86 for one. the only problem with them is the lid, and a replacement lid from REI is $3.50, so you're  better off getting a new one anyways

Got a flyer in the snail mail from REI yesterday indicating that some of the nalgenes were on SALE.

That figures, I went there last night and bought some.  The sale probably started today.  Story of my life.

I designed the pack shown below to carry water for desert camping in the summer. Let me know if anyone would like the plans.

I'd stick an umbrella in that thing.  Multi functional.
