I am in my trusty Chacos unless the temps are below 30 or so.  I backpack in the too.

not if I'm in the desert.  Too many pokey bitey things.  I like to go off trail, too.  However, I wear my Chacos hiking/backpacking many times in softer environs.

Only time I wear Tevas is around camp.  Have smashed toes or been bit by cactus too many times to not wear full hiking boots while hiking.

I think quite a few people hike in sandals, however probably on maintained trails. I suspect that none of them ever tried a bushwhack down Jack's Pass to Dominguez Spring, or cross country from Apache Canyon back to the trailhead. Off trail in BIBE......Boots - GOOD......Sandals - BAD

Off-trail, the lechugilla always points TOWARD you. Even on the MDA.

My experience with hiking in sandals is limited to areas where frequent stream crossings -- such as Coyote Gulch in Glen Canyon/Grand Staircase-Escalante -- make boots miserable. In camp, I'll wear sandals or, God help me, Crocs.

I'm with ya Jeff on the crocs.  Personally I don't think a croc would survive in the desert anyways. :icon_lol:

Yikes, I would imagine taking Crocs on a trail would be like hiking in tires.  I know I'm judging a book by the cover as I've heard they're actually comfortable but they just look way to rubbery to have any comfort/durability ratio to me.
