Another Big Bend dimension
« on: January 31, 2007, 05:11:48 PM »
I am new to this board & if this has been discussed before I apologize. I was thinking about how neat Big Bend is & when I was there I experienced another dimension that I hadn't read about befor my visit (& I did a lot of research before I visited the park). This added dimension is that as I was hikin along the various trails the fragrance of the wildflowers filled the air everywhere I hiked. I was there in April, 2005. Now this was a very good year for wildflower blooms. I also understand that after a rain (it did not rain on me while I was there) the fragrance of the creosote bush fills the air.
Any comments or additions will be greatly appreciated.
Michael

I'm still waiting (like probably the rest of us) for Creosote air freshener, scented candles, or the like.......

Every time I go, as i step out at Panther Junction it's the first thing I do. Take a deep lungful in, and it's like i'm home all over again. It's absolutely magic.

It's like...the smell of adventure.

Michael:  this year also promises to be a good one...we had a moderately wet fall, and now a fairly harsh winter (the worst I've seen in the last 5 yrs I've been living in west Tx), and both of those are good conditions for germination of wildflowers and crowding out competing species.  I have a trip planned for mid-April, hoping to see a good display of those thigh-high Big Bend bluebonnets.

one of the highlights of our Mesa Anguila trip was hiking through a sea of small yellow flowers that released a wonderfully fragrant odor as we (unavoidably) stepped on them.  It was great...

John Wells seems to be working on it.      http://thefieldlab.blogspot.com/

Rounded out plant day by finally starting a batch of creosote essential oil. (thanks for reminding me Ratgirls)  This method involves using almond oil to suck the scent out of the sap.  Next up, an alcohol based extraction method for a tincture.  Might try Everclear first because organic super booze is pretty expensive.

My first round of essential creosote oil has run its' course and was time to bottle it.  Started the next phase by adding 10 drops of the oil to 5 tsp of Everclear.  That has to sit for 48 hours, then I add 1 cup of distilled water to make a desert rain  aerosol.  Also started a tincture by crushing creosote leaves into a jar - topped off with Everclear.  This has to rest for 48 hours as well.  Jewelry - Fragrance - hmmmm....perhaps a spring fashion line next.

Awesome.  I attempted to make my own creosote soap a few short years ago.  It came out pretty good, but I never made it again.  My intention was to mass produce it, but due to the lack of creosote in San Antonio and the impossibility of a transplant, it was not to be.....

Thanks for sharing this!

How about some Cenizo or Oreganillo fragrance also?  :icon_cool:
