Any good info on plants and animals in big bend?
« on: January 11, 2012, 08:40:08 PM »
I've never been hiking in Texas or any desert region, and I'm looking for some info on the local plants and animals in big bend. Mostly the plants... I want to know what to stay away from and what plants are edible and how to identify them, just in case. I did a quick google search and didn't find anything detailed or with photos.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I enjoyed Wauer and Flemings' book Naturalist's Big Bend.  Although I do wish it had better images of the plants.  It's a short, easy read and one I go back to often.
Ah Big Bend, we will soon return to reacquaint ourselves in our ritual of blood, exhaustion and dehydration. How can we resist the temptation to strip ourselves of the maladies of civilization?

I have that book too. It seemed better for the person who knows the plants and animals but wants to know more than for the person trying to identify what they have found. I need lots of pictures.
