when is the best time to go to BiBe in Spring, before or after the crowds leave and when the nights are more comfortable for tent camping?

I have only been once during the spring (last year) and opted to go after Spring Break during the first week of April.  I found it to be quite pleasant.  It warmed up to around 90 in the low areas during the day, but stayed very cool up in the Chisos.  In fact, I had to put on a fleece a couple of the nights, but I was camping in the Basin.

What I really liked about going that late were the cacti blooms.  They were just beginning to open up.  Had I stayed another few days I think I would have seen the cacti blooms in their full glory!  I hope to catch them in full bloom this spring.  Bluebonnets were still out, the Ocotillo were still fiery red, Century Plants were in bloom and depending on where I was, the Spanish Daggers were still looking nice.

All in all, I was very happy with my timing.  I just wish I could have stayed another week to witness the full cacti bloom.

You can see a few of the photos I took last April here:

One of my favorite times of year is April.  The crowds are gone, no spring breakers, weather is perfect.  Not much precip, lots of desert blooms, cozy nights....I could go on.  April is very nice.  Did I mention the Big Bend Bluebonnets?

I went the first week of April this year and loved it.  Cactus and octillio in the lower regions of the desert  were in bloom.  The morning I headed up to the rim it was 30 degrees.  Made for a very comfortable hike in the mountains.

I plan on going back again about the same time next year.

Maybe I've just been lucky with weather, but on both of my trips to BIBE I went in early Feb.  Temps were awesome...  maybe upper 30's at night with low 70's in daytime.  Way before the spring break crowds, too.  The park was virtually empty once you left the basin parking lot.

The only drawback was the longer nights than what you'd have in April.

February is definitely when I would go if the South Rim was my main destination.  But for me, I just love seeing all of the cacti in bloom, so I would still go in April.  Therefore I would just have to make two trips!  :icon_biggrin:

I have only been to Big Bend in January since 1984.  I think it is high time that I added a spring trip to see the cactii also.

Yesterday I managed to take a small chunk of skin out of a knuckle.  Nothing major, but just peed me off because I know that takes longer to heal than other areas, and I have this trip to LNF coming up in less than a week.  I went to Target and bought some of that 'new skin' stuff, which I had never tried before, and it is just amazing stuff!  (Stings like heck when first applied though!!!) I am adding that jewel to my first aid kit!!!

We went the last week of this past April...it was absolutely gorgeous.  It did get a little warm midday, but was only in mid-nineties down near Mule Ears.  The yucca had already fruited around Mule Ears, but up in Dagger Flat, the giant dagger yucca was still in bloom.  The cacti flowers opened in the heat of the day.  It was a great trip.
Ah Big Bend, we will soon return to reacquaint ourselves in our ritual of blood, exhaustion and dehydration. How can we resist the temptation to strip ourselves of the maladies of civilization?
