I carried an REI down bag for 20 years and my son now carries it.  I actually like that bag better but I am not the same size as when I first bought the REI bag.

   I have a -20? military bag, so i get to flap it at night as well. I like this arrangement too.

 So in short, as Jeff Blaylock mentioned in the initial post, do not skimp on winter clothing, carry what you feel will keep you nice and warm and try and cut back on something else instead.

 I spend the best time of my life out in the winter desert. I still have not been to a snow in the desert, but i am yearning for one soon.

sounds like you got it made! I think, we need to learn from the Inuit! I myself believe in layering,layering,layering!
I don't like to suffocate in bulky outer wear, so by layering i can regulate my body heat better! Let us know, how you do in the snow! I would like to do that too!
