QS, you hit the nail on the head.  Us engineer-types are boring with our accuracy hang up.  I must note that you can go 71 past Spicewood then follow the signs to Marble falls and hook a left and go to Llano which is a bit more out of the way but provides another enjoyable slice of hill country driving.

Friend Al, my entire life has been surrounded by engineers and authoritarians counseling me into correctness; they remain my friends, as do you, but I have survived all of them, and still maintain my freedom of spirit.
QS
That's why we need BiBe!!

have to tell you,Al ,your Avatar makes me smile every time it pops up! So cute!

Frau, I have to resort to cute dog pictures due to my lack of Photoshop skills.  (Please notice the Santa Hats on many of the other Avatars.)

. From Houston I go I-10 to Columbus, then H-71 to Austin (by-pass on 71-290) thorough Oak Hill suburb, staying on H-71 to Marble Falls to LLano, H-29 to Mason, continue on H-29 to Menard, then H-190 through Eldorado, Iraan. to I-10 (50 miles from Ft. Stockton); then take H-385 to the Park.
Around Austin it gets a bit hairy, but i think, i will find my way.

Sorry, I did not see this. the "71-290" By-pass around Austin is quick and easy; at Oak Hill you will reach a "Y" where 290 goes left and 71 goes right. Let me know what you think. Watch out for the deer.
QS

It's certainly doable, no problem! It's all in my BiBe folder, waiting to be perused!
Thanks for the deer warning, There were hordes of them, when i left BiBe at 10:30pm on the road to Marathon!
Btw: would Marathon be a nice place to move to? Have been thinking about it lately!

Leigh ,
Last Oct. we also decided to take a slightly differant route (from Shreveport) than the usual I-20 to Monahans and then south. We turned south at Abilene on State Hwy 83 , took it to Hwy 67and took 67  (almost) to Ft Stockton. We enjoyed the drive , much more rural , not much traffic and it was at least as fast , if not faster , to Marathon (our first night's stay). I'd say give it a try.
Also, any time a person can take Hwy 90 without costing too much extra time , its well worthwhile. The Langtry Judge Roy Bean rest stop is great - is it still open ?

Thanks Alan,
Last time I went I 20-to Monahans and south from there. I plugged it into Google maps this time and it suggested I-20 to 84 at Cisco, then southwest to Ballenger,67 to San Angelo, Big Lake, I-10, Ft. Stockton and south. Said it was a little quicker, and shorter.
Just wondering if it was so.

The map I'm looking at doesn't show 84 coming thru Cisco. You'd have to exit I-20 on either 183 or (preferably) 206 and go southwest to 67 and then west as you say , to Ft Stockton. I'd suggest you look at a paper copy of a state road map , I've had mixed results with Google maps , mapquest , etc. It seems like sometimes they don't really send you the best way.
But , I bet if you somehow angle sothwest from Cisco to 67 and so on , it will be a little faster and more a interesting drive.
