Restroom Facilities
« on: December 22, 2011, 11:57:49 PM »
I'm getting pretty close to my my first trip to BIBE and a few of my younger companions are a little relunctant to spend the better part of a day on Old Ore or Glen Springs roads without as much as a pit toilet. So, please humor me.

On my map I see facilities at RGV, Castolon, Panther Junction and a few scattered along the Chisos MountIn trails. I see none on Old Ore, Glen Springs, Maverick, or other back country roads.

They would at least feel better if there is a few trees to hide behind, but I have the idea that most of the vegetation in these areas isn't going to provide much privacy.

Are there other facilities I should know about or other tips to make young ladies more comfortable.

Thanks.

When going down the back roads there is no need for toilets or trees.  The remoteness, terrain and desert plants takes care of privacy.  Worst case scenario, one must walk a couple of hundred feet from where you are and if chosen wisely it will be very private.  Just pick your path with privacy in mind. Yes, squatting is necessary as has been necessary for man and woman to perform this function for eons of time.

Al

P.S.  Be sure and require that ALL TP be bagged via a ziplock bag and hauled back to the vehicle.  If Number 2 is of concern, bring a digging device such as a short handle hoe or folding military shovel.  This adds the requirement that the chosen spot has enough sediment that it can be easily dug for at least 6" deep.  Digging a hole does not eliminate the requirement to bag the used TP.

You may want to try a portable toilet for #2 if they feel uncomfortable (like Bryson on big hill :icon_lol:) but like Al said, pack it out or then dig....for #1 they make some things for the ladies called "Freshette" or "Go Girl", both of which can be Googled I have to go to work soon or I'd put the link for ya!  :icon_biggrin: These may make it a bit easier for them.

There will be privacy, lots of arroyos and such. As far as the Chisos pit toilets....I'd rather have my own little private hole in the ground. Those things are nasty and there's no top enclosure anyway!
There's got to be something better than
In the middle....

In order to make my wife as comfortable as possible, I bring a portable toilet (about 80 bucks at Walmart) and a changing tent.   It's like a make shift outhouse.  Works great. Just be sure to dump it at RGV at the dump station.

This is the sort of thing, that will make or break your trip...specially when the ladies get in the way. Tell me about it, I have tres in my house.

Back country leaves, brushes and trees will not cut it, plain and simple. Women, need more privacy...we, men,  fall more in the who cares department. You will have to make them as close to home as possible. Think of you piece and mind, specially when you are laying at night inside of that sleeping bag. You will have them, the ladies, all over you asking for better conditions. Bring what you must, and most important buy yourself, some piece of mind.

The worst  you could do, is build a Chiquitero, :icon_rolleyes:
Stay thirsty, my friends.

hmm...  I guess privacy in this case depends on where you park the truck! :)

Do what Al said.   If you have young'ns, PRACTICE before getting them out there so that it is NOT the worst outdoor experience ever.  And yes, the animals will dig it up and spread your TP all over the place.  Just walk south of the Rice tank campsite and look for the holes.     :ecomcity:

Hmmm?  Can I ride back there?  Talk about the best seat in the house.  Better yet, I need to install some of those in the cab of the truck.  We could drive for hours without stopping.

Beat me to the bumper dumper  :icon_biggrin:

I was tail gunning a trail ride and we had some guys that were taking their wives on their first offroad adventure. While one of the group was making some trail repairs, I was hanging back with them. We ate lunch after they were finished and one of the guys "suprised" the ladies by pulling out a 5 gal bucket for them to "do their business with". He had cut a hole in it so they could sit not squat. Unfortunately it had no directions and they came back and said it war really hard to hit the hole when using it  :eusa_doh: True story, I don't think they had spent much time in the woods before.

I think they also sell a shower curtain surround-thing as an accessory for the bumper-dumper, don't they?
Are we there yet?

I'm getting this funny mental picture of the bumper dumper being used by someone... and the driver doesn't realize it is 'occupied' and drives off in the truck!  :)

Thanks for all the advice.  While shopping for portable potties at Gander Mountain, I ran across the "Go Girls" so I bought them each one and brought them home.  They scanned the package, processed for a second what I had given them and almost in unison, they threw them at me!   :eusa_snooty:   Too weird for them.

Not to worry. By the end of our trip, everyone had acquired the necessary skills so, as they say, "everything came out OK in the end."   :celebrate:

Thanks again.
