Solution to stinky backpack?
« on: January 03, 2012, 07:05:56 PM »
Ok I know this doesn't pertain directly to BIBE, but I figure there are enough outdoorsy folk in this forum and Benders know best.  So here it is: My pack stinks!  Between 40 days this summer in CO and my recent weeklong at the Bend, it has developed a pretty solid funk.  I've scrubbed it down hard with antibacterial soap but that didn't help.  This funk goes deep.  My friend recommended filling a bathtub with water and adding a couple of teaspoons bleach and soaking it.  I'm not too worried about the possible discoloration (though if it can be avoided that's be nice), but I'm afraid that the bleach may adversely affect the integrity of the fabric or plastics on the pack.  It's an REI internal frame.

Any suggestions?

Thanks a thousand,
peregrine

no answer, but unless it was stored damp & humid I can't see why it would stink  :eusa_think:

Is this a mold & mildew smell? A dirty laundry smell? A food-oriented smell?

Is there a care label on it?  If not I would contact REI.

First need to identify the etiology of the foul stench; there also will be the solution.

I think I'd try vinegar before bleach, but before that maybe something enzyme like, such as the stuff used for cat urine
sold at pet stores.

It's a sweat and body odor stench.  I don't smell very good when I hike.  :icon_frown: I think I might try vinegar.  Thanks for the help everyone.  And Flash, I did think about that.  But I like this pack and they don't make it anymore.  Kinda want to run (hike) it in to the ground.

FM, are there any references on the vinegar treatment? It is an excellent preservative but how is it applied, how long do you leave it on and how do you rinse it off?

I have portions of my body that will start to smell like vinegar without regular cleaning but it may be propionic acid.

I think I may have found a solution.  Check it out:

http://www.amazon.com/McNett-MiraZyme-Eliminator-Sporting-Mildew/dp/B000MQ8SF6

Saw on a couple of forums that people swear by it.  It's intended for scuba gear, but has been known to work well on packs without damaging fabrics and sealant.  I'm gonna order some and see how it works.  I'll let you guys know how it works.

Would you believe Hints from Heloise?   :icon_biggrin:
