« on: January 07, 2011, 06:57:02 PM »
my son is 17 and a juinor in high school. spring break of 2012 he is going on his class trip. i'm running out of time with him, so i'm thinking of a spring break trip.we will arrive on wed. march16 and depart on sunday. the plan is go to panther junction and get whatever backcountry campsite is avalible. then do hike a from there or from somewhere close. i've read about fresno being a great campsite, if it's open i'd like to try it.  what do you'll think will i be able to got a site or will i have to camp in study butte? i'm a heavy truck camper so zone camping would be a last resort.

Hey jim! Pardon me for noticing but for someone who's been on the chat board for 5 years and has been to Big Bend as much as you have....your question sounds like this is your first time!  :icon_lol: Please don't take offense but spring break has been brought up so many times here over the years I can't count. It is the BUSIEST time of year in Big Bend, with only Christmas and Thanksgiving following. Nobody can answer the question as to whether or not you'll get a campsite. You just have to be prepared for as many options possible.....good luck!

I recommend zone camping the entire trip and exploring wherever you are in the mornings and evenings. It'll be quieter, and you're (virtually) guaranteed a spot.

We were there during Spring Break 2010 with the whole family. My son was also 17 soon to be 18 and it was most likely the last opportunity for us to camp together.

The plan changed multiple times, including the day of departure, reservations had to be canceled. The options considered were Established Campgrounds or a Back Country site.

We were able to get a campsite at Madera along the river in BBRSP. We had our choice of 6 sites, however all remaining sites were full by the end of the day!

That was Monday. Those same campsites were vacated on Wednesday. We broke camp and moved further west on Thursday.

I only mention this as another option in lieu of camping in Study Butte. I have no experience on the availability of Fresno during spring break.

There will be mucho people at all of the published attractions.

Good Luck and I say GO FOR IT.

My first trip years ago (1991) was on a Spring Break; we camped down by Mule Ears.  It was a great experience, one that endeared BB to me for life.  I find that comraderie comes fast and easy in BB, so it isn't too bad running across other hikers; the spirit is contagious, and sometimes it's nice to share it, even with those one has just met! But we all know this...

Spring Break (or shortly thereafter) may be the last time I can get away to BB for the next several years, so we may just be out there as well!

But first, we are hitting the park on the 24th through the 31st...a little over two weeks to go!
Ah Big Bend, we will soon return to reacquaint ourselves in our ritual of blood, exhaustion and dehydration. How can we resist the temptation to strip ourselves of the maladies of civilization?

I plan to take my 17 year old son this year as well, while I still have the chance. He is a senior and maintaining very good grades.
I have decided that a chance to experience Big Bend is educational enough to justify taking him out of school for a few days so that we can go before the spring break rush.
If the school does not agree with my opinion, then I guess he will just be ill for 3 days......

Planning to head out on a Thursday afternoon and return home on a Tuesday. Still working on details, but the planning is a lot of the fun for me.... Then the plan goes out the window usually!
Are we there yet?

Jim, we used to go during spring break and you have to just accept that acting like a stalker is your best bet for getting a site.  No shame in that.  If you can be the first in line at Panther Junction, that might help too.  Good luck and let us know how it goes!
