TOPO Maps
« on: January 22, 2011, 09:40:15 AM »
Does anyone fold, cut and glue their TOPO maps like this? Seems a little weird to me.
I have 2 side by side (Cerro Castellan and Emory Peak) maps for my next trip that I may cut and splice together but this cut and glue thing may be too far out.

Reece, for the last few trips I have been ordering from Mytopo.com. You have the ability to create a customized topo printed on waterproof paper and they will pre-fold it for you. Relatively inexpensive considering that in some cases you might need only portions of 4- 7.5 quads. You can also shrink them down to a smaller size. Each map is 14.95.

For you DIY'ers, I know that you can do this yourself, I just find this a lot easier.

+1 for mytopo. I ordered a nice customized map showing my next overnight trip all on one map. Easy and quick.

I wanted to start my formal navigation training on the standard 7.5 Minute, 1:24 Scale from USGS - $8 a section. I have used computer printouts ranging from free TOPO to Google Earth - gotten lost doing it too. Maybe when I get more comfortable reading maps, I'll give mytopo a try.

That looks like a way to (cut and) fold one map (not spice maps).  Sort of clever, but as a map lover, it's hard for me to see cutting up a map like that.  For what?  A trick to make it a little easier to look at and flip from one section of the map to another?  Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems too easy to me to move from one part of a topo to another without cutting the map.  To each his own though.
