Water Cache Box Usage Questions
« on: January 15, 2012, 07:02:27 PM »
Just a few quick questions regarding the water cache box at homer/wilson ranch... can I cache any food in here in addition to water?

Secondly, I take it there are no garbage cans around at the ranch, so you basically end up carrying out the water bottles you used for the first 3 days AND the water bottles you store in the cache box? What do you guys do... cache in gallon jugs, fill up your existing water bottles, and cut up the jugs with your knife and store the trash in your pack?

Folks generally stop back by and pick up their caches after the hike is over. If you use a 5-gallon bucket, you can cache anything you like: Water, food, clothes, fuel, etc. Trash can be left in your cache until later when you pick it up.

We do one of two things. We either empty the jugs into water bottles and carry the jugs or come back and pick them up. If it is only a couple of jugs then bringing them along is no big deal and usually I'll just clip them to the back of my pack. My impression is that lots of people leave unused (full) bottles "for someone who might need it" and the park has to come by and clean out the box, which I have witnessed.

Last year's trip we delivered somewhere around 20 gallons at 5 different spots on our route and then went back and picked them up when we were done.
