Garmin 60CSX questions
« on: September 11, 2010, 07:57:02 PM »
OK, so I retired my Garmin 76s after last November's hike to Casa Grande where I kept losing satellite reception.  I will dedicate this unit as my navigation device for my bass boat going forward.

I picked up a Garmin 60CSX and have a few questions for the experts.  First, I downloaded lots of mapsets for Bibe, Gumo, e.t.c. (National Parks, Central Region) to the 3 GB sD card.  I also transferred my waypoints, routes and tracks but when I checked to see if they were there in the Garmin, they were not ( the maps were there, the waypoints, routes and tracks were not).  I tried again and this time sending only the waypoints, routes and tracks to the 60CSX and not the sD card and there they were!  Is this normal?  Why can you not send waypoints e.t.c. to the sD card?

Next, I have a question about what is the best way to plan a hike.  Working from a PC with mapsource and the national parks topos, is it best to plot a hike as a (1) series of waypoints, (2) a route or (3) a track?

I want to refine my hikes using the best method for navigation.

The mircoSd card can only store maps, and tracks. The tracks are not viewable to the unit, they are backup to the active track and are accessed by downloading the .gpx files created when you choose the option to backup the tracks to the data card.

I like to create tracks in Mapsource, convert them to routes and upload the routes.

Routes are a group of related waypoints with bearing and distance info.

Thanks BK.  :notworthy:   The owners manual is not exactly clear in this area.

OK, another question on the Garmin 60CSx.  If I load new mapsets to the sD card, will my existing mapsets be erased?  I remember while using an earlier Garmin GPS model, that the existing mapsets were erased and I had to go back and re-transfer all the mapsets I wanted on the same download.  :eusa_think:

Yes, they will be overwritten. The uploaded file is called GMAPSUPP.IMG all maps must be uploaded together. Are you using Mapsource to do the transfer? If so select all of the desired maps first, then upload.

Hi Bk, Yes, I am using Mapsource so will re-transfer existing plus the new mapsets.  I appreciate the confirmation.

QS, I know you, you navigate by map, compass and memory....  I'm a tech guy, so I like to play with modern technology.  Your way is no doubt more reliable.

I'm glad I noticed this thread.  I also own a 60csx and I know I don't use 90% of its features.

I've got his unit too and probably only use 5% of its capability.  Took a class at REI a couple of years back and it was helpful as far as marking waypoints and finding your way back to them once you had been there but that was about it.

Wayne...can you share what webpage did you use to download your maps?. Just to check it out.

I now carry all the time my 60 Csx. When ever i have some time off, in my job i take out my manual and hit the book. There are many small nifty little things you get to learn from your Garmin when you make time for yourself and never stop learning. Besides, it is a great ice breaker, when you are around strangers.

I also am discovering Geocaching with it...I tell you, it is fun with the little girls and me.
Stay thirsty, my friends.

Since I have never done this I cannot state with certainty, but I think some of the newer Garmin software allows multiple map sets. ( i.e. more than one .img file)

Sure Homero.  Check out this link;  http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/  They have free Garmin compatible mapsets available for the United States and many other countries including Mexico.  Since they are not official Garmin maps, Garmin would probably advise you to "use at your own risk..."
