Thanks for the heads up.  With 4gb and 8gb micro SD cards getting dirt cheap, I wondered if Garmin would update the firmware.  Will be nice to have the entire country topo's on my unit by doing a single upload.

Ditto from me.  So do I understand you correctly that we can now save over 2GB of maps if we have a larger micro SD card?  Before I go trying to upload more on my chip, does anyone know if this upgrade increases the 900 or so limit on number of map segments?

The  limit of 2025 segments was in place before this upgrade. I don't think that has changed.

Thanks BK, WL2 indicated there were only 908, but I think you are right on the 2025.  The last time I tried to upload more map sets I think it stopped at around 2000.  I appreciate you helping us who are less familiar with all the features.  I know... read the manual.

A bit of clarification.  Randell stated there are just over 900 map sets in the 24K central.  I stated that you would max out the number map sets before you got over the memory limit, but did not specify the number.  That has not changed.  If you try selecting map types either the topo series or the street series you will find the file number limit of 2025 is usually hit before you fill up a 2 Gb card.  Nothing wrong with buying bigger cards as you can store tracks and other files on them, but you will not necessarily be able to store more mapsets.  Unless they change the map set number limit and who knows maybe with the next software release they will.

I have noticed that in the newest version of the City Navigator North America maps the map tiles are much larger so there are fewer map tiles (sets).

Indeed.  If I recall correctly, there were 81 maps for NA totalling 1.044GB.  I use City Nav NT 2009.  It fits easily on the 2GB chip I just bought for $10!  What a deal, the first 1 GB chip I bought was $50 on Amazon.
