Garmin Colorado
« on: February 21, 2008, 08:29:47 AM »
I just got a new Garmin Colorado 400t and though I would do a review.  Then I found this review and it is a good one so read it if you are interested in the Colorado.

http://www.gpsinformation.org/penrod/colorado/colorado.html

I have already downloaded software version 2.4 and it fixed some of the power issues he talks about, but it still uses batteries faster than my older 60Cs.  That said I really like the unit and am pleased with it, but if you have a 60Csx you certainly do not need to upgrade.  I had my 60Cs for over four years so naturally I have gotten used to it's features and it is taking some getting used to the new unit.  If you are wondering about the new rocker/roller device that really works well.  I use tracks a lot for marking trails and boundaries and this unit does not have the functionality the 60 series units have.  Hopefully they will improve some of these issues with future software releases.  After I have used the unit for several months the good and bad points should be more obvious and I will report on them then.

Looks like they starting to lower the price of the 60Csx. I saw a Cabela's ad this morning for the unit bundled with car power kit, Topo map, and carrying bag for $349.

The 60Csx is a really good option right now.  Great receiver, good software features, and a good price.

Where are the software features for the 60 Csx unit, that I just can't find on garmin's webpage?....Im just stumble upon the Web Updater

I am reading the Unwelcomed surprises for the 400 t, and those are glitches i can live with...so far.

So far I have had no 'glitches' with my Colorado.  What I am a little concerned about are features that were on the 60 series but dropped from the Colorado.  Proximity alarm on waypoints, waypoint averaging, and track flexibility.  Nothing major just annoying.  The track features are especially annoying since saving tracks to .gpx files should make them even more flexible than the 60 series.  Instead there are almost no provisions for modifying and working with tracks on the unit.  I will say that road navigation with streets is much better, but this is primarily a hiking outdoor type unit.  I do believe that Garmin will address these issues in the next few months, but of course they may not.

Fantastic!  Now the price on the Colorado will drop through the floor.

However, I won't be rushing out to buy the Oregon

The Oregon 400t is $639, but the only thing it has over the Oregon 200 is pre-loaded basemaps.  You can just get the Oregon 200 and load all of your current maps onto it and only pay $479.  The price for the Oregon 200 will probably be lower on gpsnow.com.  3" touch screen would be pretty nice until it got all scuffed up.
