Garmin Tracks and Google Earth
« on: December 05, 2009, 01:32:16 PM »
Hello,

I finally broke down and bought a Garmin for an upcoming Big Bend trip.  I got the Garmin GPSMap 60CSx, it's pretty cool.

Today I did a test run to "figure it out".  It was pretty easy to set up and get a Track.  After my test I came home and open the GPX file in MapSource and then used the function in MapSource (View > View in Google Earth).  The Track came into Google Earth and looked great until I rotated Earth and noticed my points and track were floating above the Earth.

I checked the individual points for height and they were at the right altitude.

Has anyone else had this problem?
Did I set something up wrong?
Is it a MapSource, Garmin or Google Earth problem?

I'm kind of clueless.

Any and all help will be appreciated.

Thanks.

Brad

I figured it out...

There were three Waypoints on my Tracks and unless I blacked out this morning on my test run I'm pretty sure they should have been there.

The Waypoints were:
1. Garmin
2. Garmin Europe
3. Garmin Tawian

After I deleted those my Track clamped right down to the surface in Google Earth.

While I'm posting to myself I guess I could ask another question.

Any tips or tricks I should do or know about with the 60CSx?

Do people GeoCache in Big Bend?

Thanks.

Yes, but I believe all but the Casa Grande summit log are virtual caches. However, I'll gladly defer to someone who actually owns a GPS unit. :icon_rolleyes:

Hey BadKnees,

Thanks for the link, the message was pretty clear about GeoCaching.

Looks like I won't be doing any of that.

Thanks again.

you should get a screen protector for it. i have a scratch on mine that could have been avoided
also get a longer lanyard so you can tie it off on your shoulder strap of your pack. trusting the clip alone could result in a lost GPS unit

James,

I had a scratch in mine that really bugged me, so I bought something at the auto parts store called "Meguiar's PLASTX - Clear Palstic Cleaner and Polish. It is cream with utra fine abrasive and leaves the screen beautifully polished. While probably isn't going to work for a deep scratch, it cleaned my 60CSX perfectly.

Yes folks, all good advises here. But nobody has adressed this question. Is there a page of tips and tricks for the 60 Csx?

I thought WL2 would jump right in, but if any one else knows of this. Maybe the can come in and post?.  :eusa_shifty:

Brasso will work too.
