Title: Google Earth Imagery Update
Post by: Lance on May 26, 2013, 02:22:33 PM
I've noticed in the past few days that Google Earth has updated it's imagery of the park and elsewhere with data from 4/18/2013.  I must say it's at least twice as good as the previous imagery and VERY detailed!
Make sure you go into Tools->Options->Terrain section and check the box for "Use high quality terrain".
Check it out..

I emailed google a while back and told them that their map didn't identify highway 170 between Sturdy Butt and Presidio.  They responded back and said I was right and said they would email me when they fixed it.  Hasn't happened yet, may never happen.  Bing at least identifies 170 on their map.

You should check out Bing Earth then..

OOPS. I think it is an old tank about 40 ft in diameter

Probably, USGS topo says there's a windmill there.

Another Homer Wilson project? or weird geographical feature?

Probably one of Homer's projects. Doesn't look like a dam, maybe a stone corral?

This is another one of Homer's Tanks

Yeah, me too.  Wish I would have had the new imagery 3 months ago when I started this Google Earth project.  Finding alot of points are off by just a little.  Oh well.  I've got all the campsites coordinates now.

Google usually takes a while. But every error I've reported gets fixed within a few months.  Of course, adding a road is probably more complicated than the minor things I report.

I drove by there in April. Looks like a major expansion has taken place. Many of these are white (plastic?) wraps over a framework of some kind. Vented or meshed on top I think. Some kind of plant experiment?

Ok, I guess this will get old, but . . .

Would this be the Loftin place?

Not in the Bend, but here's a nice shot of Lockheed Martin's top secret radar testing facility where they did the radar signature testing on the F-117 stealth fighter and the Navy's version, the A-12 "Flying Dorito".

the building is one of the nicest ruins I have seen. It was probably part of the Ore terminal project. there are many very substantial wooden beams around and some were used to build that building. its mainly brick, and has 3 rooms.  lots of other interesting pieces of junk laying around.

the large triangle, I think is a concrete structure, I have not personally seen it when I was in the area looking around a few times, but someone sais it looks to be some type of chute or something

how about this? I have driven by it many times and even seen crews working on it, but im not sure what it is or what its purpose is.
Maybe something like the Nazca lines?

Funny I had seen that also. From the road it looks like folks had been driving in the desert doing donuts, just 'cause they could. From GE, it looks like material being dumped perhaps?  :eusa_think:

its a bunch of brush debris in bundles all stacked up and lined up. I had wondered if it was some planned out erosion prevention during flash floods or something.

I believe it's a passive water catchment system..

What's a guzzler?

I believe a guzzler is a passive, automated, water-catchment & release system designed to attract wildlife (if you're a hunter, let's say), or to support wildlife (if you think you're increasing their chance of surviving a drought, let's say). I don't think they're commonly made with concrete, and I would kind of doubt BBNP would sanction/allow them, but...

...I could be wrong on all counts.  :ecomcity:
