Title: Google Earth - Placemark cleanup
Post by: The Scorpion on August 21, 2013, 11:07:14 PM
Google earth sure is a pain the butt sometimes. Over time somehow almost all of my placemarks (waypoints) have been duplicated. Some only 2 instances occur, while many others are 8+ instances.

on the map it looks to be 1 waypoint, but when you click on it, it expands out to show you just how many are there. I have searched the google community and the web in general, but I have yet been able to find a way to remove all the duplicates at once with out having to check a boat load of placemarks

any ideas?

I agree it can be a pain in the butt sometimes.  Not sure why your placemarks are being duplicated.
If you're willing, could you zip up and email me your myplaces.kml file in the following folder.
I'll take a look at it and try to figure out what's going on.

myplaces.kml should be in the following folder on Windows 7.

C:\Users\%username%\AppData\%Local or LocalLow\Google\GoogleEarth

Also, you may want to download the latest version of Google Earth and install it.

Try using Notepad++ or another editor that can handle XML code.

James,

Here is a suggestion........

IF YOU HAVE GARMIN BASE CAMP?

1. Import the kml into BASE CAMP
2. Edit the waypoints and tracks ie, delete what you don't want etc.
3. Export the file as a .gpx
4. Go here http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/ (http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/)
5. Convert your .gpx back to .kml
6. Open the .kml in GE

I was looking for a way to sort by the LAT/LON , this will help me find the duplicates much faster.

example:
LAT  = abc.123
LON = 123.abc

Its NAME is called Window Trail head.

Now I might have another place name just called start here with the exact same LAT/LON, then a few more once called window ot something else. so sorting in GE or in Base camp by name does not help. Note pad++ does not let me sort eiter, im tired...blech

http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/ (http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/)  will let you export to a .txt file which you could pull in to excel, sort, and then save as a .txt file. Once you do that you can convert to .klm, gpx or just about anything you need.
