Interesting stuff
Leave "quit" at the car.  Embrace the trail as your friend.  Expect to enjoy yourself, and to be amazed.

I still hike with a 5-foot broom handle as my hiking pole (but that is changing).

I would really like to learn about the many uses of technology such as you describe.  My wife and sons would really like me to.

Sad admission: I used an ancient flip phone until about a year ago.

I still do.  I've never been able to rationalize spending the additional money for a smartphone.  I already have all of the devices that a smartphone would replace anyway, so I just carry on with my dumbphone.  I carry both it and a GPS unit when hiking, as well as a paper map and Brunton compass (and satphone, too).  I use the GPS unit mostly to check on the distance traveled and the time of day (since I don't wear a watch).  Locating where I am is not normally an issue, as my eidetic memory means it's very difficult for me to get lost.  The map is good for locating myself in the larger scheme of things (the GPS unit's screen is very small).

I looked up eidetic memory.  Eidetic memory = photographic memory.

I don't have that, but I have a solid "inner sense" of direction - that fails me about one time in 20!
