iPhone Apps?
« on: March 01, 2010, 12:17:42 AM »
I'm not quite ready to buy a GPS but I have an iPhone 3GS and was wondering if anybody had any apps they recommended for hiking/backpacking with it?

I'd really just like to track my trip, see how far I've traveled, and maybe overlay that information onto a map on the phone.

i have an iphone with an app called MotionX GPS. You need cell service for it to work and thats not going to be a trust worthy thing to rely on in big bend. you can download area maps, but the maps for big bend do not have any of the trails on there. you can however set it up to send a way point to several email address that have a link to a map so you can see where you were. its neat, and fun to play with but no way would i trust it.

I trust my GPS unit

There is this Geocaching App , but like previous comments. Don't rely too much on it, if you are not going to get reliable cellphone coverage. Trust you GPS,instead. Trust even more your map..
Stay thirsty, my friends.

I'm not certain about this, but I believe the iphone does have a dedicated gps radio in it.  I know my Blackberry does.  The one big problem with having a gps radio in your phone is that drains the battery pretty quick, or at least that's my understanding.

yes, the 3G and 3Gs iPhone have an internal GPS receiver. However you need maps and you get them vis the cellular network, I haven't found any that have national park maps with trails that are not Dependant on the cellular network.

there is a TomTom app, but its $89. I still would not rely on a cell phone based GPS unit.
