Little Help?
« on: December 07, 2009, 02:22:13 PM »
I spent the last few days out around Langtry. I turned on my 13 year old Garmin GPS 12 and saw my battery power was low. Turned it off, reloaded the batteries booted it up and now get this message: "Upload Not Present". I had one person tell me to leave the a batteries out of it for a few days and put them back in and it should work. I've also been told it has lost its programming and to toss it. I had another person tell me to link it to Garmin's website and download the latest software version. If so I'll spring for the data cable and do it. I've been told that I won't loose my waypoints. Sure got a lot of good ones I don't want to loose. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I googled your problem and found many people reporting the same issue. Responses ranged from "download the latest software" to "reboot". With a 13 year old GPS it may be time to put it to sleep. But I would call Garmin support before spending any money because I'm sure they would have this problem logged.

Good luck and next time you get a GPS be sure to download your waypoints so you'll have them backed up. You might still be able to save them, check some of the GPS forums or ask Tech support.

I bought a data cable for my GPS 12. It came with the round 4 pin one end, serial port the other. No serial port on the home computer so I took it to work this morning and found an internet capable machine that had a serial port. I tried using Garmins Webupdater software.... no luck. So I downloaded the OS to the HD and ran it from there and Viola!  :eusa_dance: new OS installed perfectly. Still had all my waypoints, etc. Now my problem is I need software to download the waypoints to my computer so I can upload them to my new Garmin GPSmaps 60 CSx I purchased at a pawn shop for a stupid low price (I'd tell you but you wouldn't believe me). The computer doesn't see my GPS 12 as a drive since it's going thru a serial port. If anyone knows how to get data off a GPS 12 without the Garmin software let me know.

Have you tried using Mapsource?

To transfer data to MapSource from a device:

Verify that the device is powered on, properly connected to the computer, and that the device’s transfer mode is set to Garmin (if applicable). Refer to your GPS Owner’s Manual for further instructions.

Select Receive From Device in the Transfer menu.

Choose the device or click Find Device if your device does not appear in the list. When MapSource detects the device, the name of the connected device appears in the Device field.

NOTE: By default, MapSource searches all connected serial ports for your device. If necessary, you can use the Transfer preferences tab to specify a serial port on which to search for a device. See Setting Preferences for more information.

Place a check mark next to the items you want to transfer to MapSource from the GPS device.

NOTE: If an option is grayed out, it is not available for your unit, or you have not selected that type of data in MapSource.

Click Receive. The data is sent to MapSource.

You can then save this as a .gpx file or a .gdb file to your HDD. After that hook up your 60CSX with a USB cable and do the opposite, ie. use the send command from transfer option.......You'll figure it out.

This all assumes you have MAPSOURCE????

If not ....You can download a fully working copy of MAPSOURCE from Garmin Training Center - http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/cache/offonce/us/intosports/training_center;jsessionid=E6B8A2096EF7D328D0689B9E9365AC84

I have mapsource at home. I'll have to bring it to work and do it here. No serial port on the home pc. I guess the optional PC software kit Garmin was talking about is mapsource. I'm just glad to get the old GPS back from the dead. I wonder if you could cut the serial port connector off and wire on a USB connector. That would make life simpler. I'll have to ask the IT guys here.

You should be able to find a 9 pin serial to usb connector at Fry's, or Radio Shack somewhere. No need to cut and solder.

I thought that too. I was describing putting a USB on the cord to one of our IT guys and I guess to get rid of me he gave me a serial port board, actually a dual port board. So I should be all good tonight.
