« on: November 11, 2010, 09:50:19 PM »
Im working on a possible hike for my next outing and have layed out a route in Garmin mapsource. I have the distance of the route, but I can not get it to show me the vertical profile so I can check the elevation gains

is there anyway I can find this out??

Excellent question, but I don't have the answer. I want to know too. I'm sure BK would know.

I'm guessing that if the map you're drawing your track on has to have the elevations programed in.  Not just showing the contour lines.  You could try drawing on google earth, and then import to mapquest.  It may bring the elevation data with it.

I am so out of date!  I would get the USGS 7.5' map(s) and track the desired hike from Point A to Point B.

If I don't yet have the maps I would go to Google Earth and do the same to estimate.

I am sure there are much better methods these days.

Or Perhaps not!

I just went to Miller Blueprint in Austin for some USGS topo maps.  In Houston I would go the Brown Bookstore:

Excellent question, but I don't have the answer. I want to know too. I'm sure BK would know.

I do.

1. Instead of using the route tool, draw your planned route with the track tool.

2. Save as a .gpx file

3. Go to gpsvisualizer http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/ and select the "convert a file" option from the menu

4. Check .gpx as your output option

5. Click the "choose file" button and  navigate to your saved file and select it.

6. Use the drop down "plain text output units" and change to U.S.

7. Use the drop down "Add DEM elevation data:" and select "from best available source"

8. Now, hit the "convert button" The  file will be created and you can download it from the link supplied.

You will need to change the filename extension from .xml to .gpx

You should then be able to open this in Mapsource and see an elevation profile.

Let me know if you have any other questions

Homero, I do have a GPS but I only use it to figure out where I am on the 7.5' map!

Some mapsource maps have DEM built in and will show a profile if you create a track.  My verson of national parks 24k will create profile but my 100k topo will not.  I do not have the state 24k maps but I suspect they have DEM data.

Thanks BK, that totally worked.

I have my track and elevation, now the hard part is to see if I can actually do it on my next trip

My roommate at TAMU worked his way through college, at least partly, by drawing 7.5' maps using a stereoscope and a pen.  The boy was good which is why he had the job.

As best I understand it, the current maps are also interpreted from aerial photos although perhaps not so reliant on the skill of an interpreter and his pen. What's amazing to me is how good these older maps are.
