Recommendations on a decent GPS.....
« on: March 10, 2007, 03:17:55 PM »
We have a nice gift certificate from Cabela's.....wht the heck do you spend it on....you've seen their catalogue.  Anyway, we thought we'd pick up a GPS strictly for backcountry hiking purposes.  Any recommendations on one that's a good value for the $.  I shouldn't tell this on myself....first time I wne elk hunting in the Gila, well I wasn't familiar with the northern part near the Black range.  We arrived thursday afternoon, set up camp, did some scouting, built a fire and watched it snow 12" on the level.  The next day, the elk had moved, but, close to sunset I started following a nice bull.  I went over one too many peaks and with the excitement, dark was upon me.  Ever stumbled around in 12" of snow, 25 degrees in the wilderness....well after a couple hours of screaming my lungs out for my group, or anyone else within shouting range, i was too hoarse to talk.  late in the 4th hour and just before midnight i guess, i walked upon a camp.  Why didn't i buy a gps right after that trip?  Really good question!!  Anyway, that's my piece of humility for the group.....

No discussion required, I believe I speak for the majority here that will testify that the Garmin GPS60CX is a way you can not go wrong irregardless of your needs.

Shanea....I second your recommendation.  I have a GPS60CSx and it is the only game in town, in my opinion.

Very good.  Even if you have to fork over some money to use with the gift cert, do it, instead of buying a chaper unit.  If you decide you don't like GPSing, then sell it on EBAY.  Better than buying another unit, taking the depreciation, selling it on EBay, and then buying the 60CX.
