What is a good route editing program?
« on: March 03, 2014, 07:11:40 AM »
I've got a Garmin Etrex GPS and am looking for software that allows me to create routes from Google Earth and edit routes.  So far, I haven't been impressed with the Garmin Base Camp software that came with my GPS.  Can someone recommend a program for creating or editing routes?

I use garmin basemap for storing my waypoints & tracks, etc.  I haven't tried the other programs, but haven't heard great things about any of them (Topo, etc.).  For planning trips, though, sometimes I use the topo overlays for google earth (http://www.gelib.com/store/shaded-usgs-topographic-maps.html).  You can draw a track or waypoint using the topo and instantly convert it to a .gpx or .kml format, then import it into basemap.  Recommend you check it out at the link above, it's kind of fun to toggle the topo for an area on and off while looking at it in google earth.  You can adjust the transparency of the overlay, too.

I use this online file converter. I can start with a .gps from my Garmin and convert it to .kml for Google Earth editing. I can also go the other direction - create a track in GE and save as .kml and then convert it to .gps for loading to my Garmin. The web site is a little clunky but it works and it's fast.

What do you not like about using Google Earth to make the routes and then import into Basecamp?  I find this to be a pretty effective method.
Been thinking about maybe setting up a online GoToMeeting and maybe have an 1-2 hour virtual class on the route creation process as well as other tips with Basecamp and Google Earth. Would that interest anyone?  Maybe if a 3-5 people thought so, I'd set one up.

Include me as well.  I think I know how to do it but a refresher couldn't hurt!

That's four, maybe one or two more?
Requirements would be a computer with Basecamp and Google Earth installed.
Basically you would dial into the meeting number and log in with your PC so you could see my screen.
We also have the ability to share your screen as well.
I'd start out with the basics and then we could do some Q&A on whatever topics you'd like.

I have a android app called backcountry navigator, which I'm now sometimes using in lieu of google earth b/c of its many topo options. I can export routes i make there to gpx or kml files. I think the program I use to load gpx onto my garmin is called easygps (and it's free). I have another program to convert between gpx and kml. This system works effortlessly for me.
