Campsites along Elephant Tusk trail like Dodson?
« on: January 18, 2010, 10:44:06 AM »
Heading out in a about a week to do our second off-trail backpacking trip.  This time instead of walking out and back, we are going to make a return loop by coming up Elephant Tusk trail.  I remember a post about a campsite next to the trail near ET. It was suppose to be around the second spring going north up the trail.  I am wondering if there are campsites along the ET trail much like they are along the Dodson?  Thanks

I remember a pretty nice camp spot when going south where it climbs out of Fresno Creek just south of Tortuga. The spot is at the top of the small saddle (also just north of first the "E" in "Elephant Tusk Trail" on the topo.

One one trip we stayed at the second spring spot you mentioned. On the small side but had a great view of ET. On that trip there was some water in the spring.

On another trip we camped past ET where the trail exited the ET drainage and was above a small wash. There was a nice bench above the wash.

A lot of the trail is in washes so don't think there are as many obvious camp spots like Dodson.
