Glenn Spring Reliability and Water Quality
« on: October 12, 2018, 02:32:14 PM »
Hey All,

I've read that Glenn Spring is reliable year-round. Has this been your experience? I'm headed to the national park in a week or two and was considering a few nights in that part of the park. Refilling water there would simplify things greatly.  Are there any issues with water quality (excessive salts) or can I filter the water there normally like I would from Fresno, Boot, etc.?

Thank you!

-KS

All I can say is Iíve never driven through the little crossing there at the beginning of Black Gap Road and not seen water running.   As to itís quality I have nothing to offer. The spring itself is deep in the brush, presumably in the vicinity of the big cottonwood.

We have always seen water running there too.  But you better make sure you use disinfecting drops AND a filter.  There is a car campsite right by the spring,( just like "Fresno creek" on the Dodson trail), and I guarantee you stupid ass people have crapped all over the place right next to that spring.     Mmmm-Mmmm Good    :eusa_dance:

Good to hear another vote on water reliability. And yeah, i don't drink water without purifying it. The only exception might be if I were close to the top of the continental divide with minimal chance of upstream human or animal "activity".

Here is one more testimony.  In Dec. of 2011 during the historic drought we walked past Glenn Spring and it ran for at least a quarter mile down wash.  I would say it is as reliable as any water source in the park.
temperatures exceed 100 degrees F
minimum 1 gallon water per person/day
no shade, no water

I believe there is no longer any place in the lower 48 where it is safe to drink untreated water directly out of a stream. According to what I have read, the intestinal parasites have adapted and now are simply dormant in freezing temperatures. So it's no longer safe to drink snowmelt at high altitudes.
For every complex problem there is a solution that is simple, obvious, and wrong.
