Possible Itinerary
« on: February 21, 2015, 03:48:39 PM »
Unfortunately can only go during Spring Break.

Thoughts?

Day 1: Drive from Austin early, start South Rim.

Day 2: Finish South Rim Trail, do Emory Peak. Drive to Terlingua, hang out there.

Day 3: Closed Canyon, River Road, Big Bend Ranch State Park day-hike (?? Fresno Canyon?)

Day 4: Marufo Vega

Day 5: Finish Marufo Vega. Visit Boquillas, Mexico. Drive to Austin.

That's a heckuva drive you throw in there in the middle.  I'd say the drive from Sauceda to MV TH is probably 3-4 hours

Do MV and SR together, then last days in BBRSP;  Or vice versa

Ditto SF's suggestions.  The drive between the parks is a long one (even without retracing your steps).  It's also one of the most stunning drives I've ever made, especially along the river.  Plenty of Kodak moments which adds to the length.
A few years ago, I took my kids on the tourist visit of Big Bend (Mariscal, Wilson ranch, Santa Elena, etc).  Our last day was the drive to Sauceda where we spent the night.  We returned to Austin via Alpine.

1.  Have a Plan B and a Plan C since you are visiting during Spring Break.  Very possible you won't be able to walk up and get a same day Chisos camp site reservation.

2.  As others have said, your Day 3 schedule is extremely aggressive.

3.  MV is going to be hot.

4.  Day 5 also seems like a lot with the Boquillas crossing.  I'm not sure if the border station is open every day or not.

Thanks y'all.

Google maps through me off with Fresno -- Fresno Canyon is right next to Closed Canyon, the Fresno Rim isn't. Definitely couldn't do all that in one day!

Rancherias Canyon seems to be close to Closed Canyon as well, and is only 2 hours away from MV.

For the campground issue, is that true of the backcountry too?

I agree about the last day, my thinking was that Boquillas is right next to MV, I've never been to Mexico, and we could do it in 2 hours or less.

I'm not trying to hijack the thread, but I also have Terlingua in my itinerary for an evening adventure (dinner). How far is Terlingua from Panther Junction (drive time)?

25 minutes.

What makes Sauceda to MV long is going all the way out the west side of the park and then the long ride on the river road to Terlingua; then another 25 minutes to PJ and then another 40 to MV TH.  Probably a good 2.5 hours total

Nearly all the official back country campsites will likely betaken.  But, as SF says, if you are willing to backpack a ways into sections where camping is generally allowed, you should be able to find a nice spot.  Good luck with finding something available in the Chisos.  Maybe one of the Laguna West sites.
Wake me when it's time to go.
