Stuarts peak
« on: September 05, 2010, 06:15:06 PM »
We started at the end of Dagger Flat road; heading to the south instead of north to Dagger Flats.  We quickly gained most of the 2000' required for the trip, staying on the ridgeline.  It helps to find the rocky edge of the escarpment even lower down to avoid the worst of the cactus.  Cactus was not all bad- we ate several of the purple tunas off the prickly pear which helped with the 85-100 degree temps during the hike.  Several false summits daunt you along the way, the last of which actually has a USGS marker with an arrow pointing to the real peak a quarter mile away with another marker and some old timbers.  Vista is surprisingly broad esp. of Big Brushy Creek headed toward the big drop off to La Linda to the east.  But also Sue and Roy peaks and Mckinney hills display well.  On the way back, we spotted a cave and large red area on the east side of the ridge as we headed back north.  The red material turned out to be extruded from a vertical cinnabar mine shaft, and a number of the rocks nearby had silver shading on them.  From this area you could descend to the valley to the east and then cross over a mile farther north, but due to the heat we returned to the ridge and went back the same way, happy to find the cool water in the vehicle.
