Any recent spring reports?
« on: January 18, 2012, 12:39:05 PM »
I'm hiking the outer mountain loop trail next week , and want to know if anyone has recently hiked here and can verify that boot spring, upper juniper spring, fresno creek, or any other springs are running or not along the OML. I'll be leaving my report upon my return.

My wife and I did a version of the OML in Nov; we began at the Dodson trailhead. I could not count on any springs flowing, so we hauled a full-load of water.  I am glad we did as we rolled into the Homer Wilson with only about 4 oz left.  There was water at Fresno Spring and in the tinajas in Boot Canyon then.  I wish I done a little more homework to know enough to check out Upper Juniper Spring.

If interested, you can find our trip report here:

There are some more recent trip reports than mine which may provide some answers.

Ah Big Bend, we will soon return to reacquaint ourselves in our ritual of blood, exhaustion and dehydration. How can we resist the temptation to strip ourselves of the maladies of civilization?

Boot Spring is not running.
There's some green water in the Tinajas along Boot Canyon.
Upper Juniper Spring is barely running.  I was only able to get a liter out of it three weeks ago, I wouldn't count on it.
Fresno is running about 20-30 yards below were the Dodson Trail crosses.

Awesome, thank you. I think I may roll the dice and plan on getting water at fresno. If not, my water is cached at the homer wilson ranch.

I saw water in Boot Canyon(Jan 24th), but it was stagnant and pretty green. I didn't bother looking for Boot Spring or the Upper Juniper Spring since reports all said they were not running. Fresno Creek was running at the intersection of the creek and the Dodson on January 25th.

Plenty of water @ Mule Ears.  Good water @ San Juan Spring, zero water @ the pouroff at the lower end of Smoky Cr.,
good water below the dike @ mile 18 toward Study Butte at the second arroyo crossing north of the highway......

Juan, you have been covering some ground, all the way from the Rosillo's down to Smoky Creek.  Thanks for those reports!

The San Juan Spring I mentioned is below Smoky Spring
in the Quemadas.  San Juan Spring in the Rosillos is about
20 yards outside the park in private land. Been on several short
trips lately...... :)

Yep, the one in the maze of hills south of Smoky.  Easily one of the
easiest places to get turned around/cliffed out and just plain struggle
to get anywhere found yet.  Surface water but not too easily gathered,
spread out over sand, no pools etc.   Tried to attach a photo, but the
file's too big .....

Reza on rancherias loop trail in bbrsp flowing great 2/7, rancherias spring good on 2/8 (better the farther downstream you go), nothing in pine canyon 2/14, smoky spring steady shallow flow 2/16 w/several bailable pools (we got a gallon).

Allthis before large rain event later in day 2/16

2/22 tres papalotes in solitario solar-driven 1000g tank working fine.

2/23 enough water in various tinajas in left-hand shutup to last several days, in my opinion. Should pre-filter w/bandana in most cases.

You might already be gone but DesertRatShorty gave us a report from about 10 days ago here.  Water in all three places.
