I'm doing the OML again on April 2nd.  Should be fun.  =)

I'm sure it will be fun...  I did enjoy an entire day along the Dodson meeting no other people other than a volunteer group working the trail at the eastern end of the Dodson.  The solitude was refreshing.

My least favorite part of the OML was the slogging through pea-sized gravel along the lower sections of Blue Creek trail.  The upper sections of Blue Creek weren't much fun in full sun and 80F weather in early Feb.

I think the complete lack of man-made noise is what helps make the OML hike such a joy.  In contrast, I think the trails I've hiked in the Grand Canyon are more picturesque, however the visual beauty of the canyon is spoiled by the endless procession of tour copters flying overhead.  More than once I've flipped the bird at copters buzzing overhead.

We're going from the Basin up Pinncales to Juniper, etc etc.  The "normal" route.  We leave Thursday for the Park and plan on hiking to Boulder Meadows to camp the first night and heading out from there.  First night at JC1, second night homer Wilson and 3rd night at Laguna Meadows.

After that we're leaving the park and headed to Hueco Tanks to boulder for a few days.

JC1 to Homer Wilson is a long way with no shade.  I suggest you plan to camp instead somewhere along the Dotson.
Wake me when it's time to go.

Especially since you can't camp near the Homer Wilson ranch house or within sight of the road.

I too was wondering about your day from JC1 to near Homer Wilson.  That is definitely a long day.  It may be well within your abilities, but if you haven't done the Dodson before, it is a lot of up and down hiking with actually very few flat stretches.

I hiked from near the bottom of Juniper Canyon, then across the Dodson trail to the Smoky Creek crossing and that made for a long hike in itself.  If you got water at Fresno Creek, you could dry camp near Smoky Creek and help to break up that day.
