3 Days to go...
« on: February 29, 2016, 04:14:30 PM »
So three days and counting....First time hiking..period.  Solo trip.  I've got my pack at 22 lbs without water -- I figured carrying in 6L (2 gallons), at 8lbs per gallon, my pack weight is at 38lbs.  Carrying an Osprey Kestrel 48.  For a full two day hike, is this heavier than the average bear?  I'm physically fit -- not an athlete but fit enough I hope. Gone over the supplies list many times and I think I'm set.

Planning on flying in to Midland from Dallas on Thursday morning, and reaching Chisos lodge about 2PM.  Hoprfully can get campsites for the first night at PI1, next night at NE-3, then the third at SW-3.  I plan on hiking the mountain trails only...just taking my time and making my way around!  Hopefully will be able to summit Emory Peak that first day as well.  I thought about doing the entire OML but didn't want to feel rushed on my first trip.

Thanks to everyone on this site for your valuable info...Couldn't have planned this so effectively without ya'll.  I'll post pics next week.

Please feel free to offer any last minute advice, as I'm getting pumped, but a bit anxious at the same time.

8 liters (qts)=2 gal. but you had the math right for total weight.  Well done on a fairly light pack for a first ever trip, especially if that includes food.   :eusa_clap:  Now you can start the journey towards even lighter weights and great trips.  Good decision on not trying to attempt the OML on your first time out.  Hopefully you will find some water in the pools in Boot canyon so that 2 gals. will last the 3 days.

Look forward to your report!

I just returned from an overnighter in the Chisos (trip report to come) and on Saturday 2/27 we filtered water from a large, very clear pool in Boot Creek between the NE1 trail intersection and where the trail heads up from the creek and approaches the rim. There was a small flow coming downhill into the pools and the water was great.
