Emory/South Rim
« on: November 10, 2014, 05:00:10 PM »
Last day in the park. I went for the big finish.

Emory is a scramble at the very top. There are two rock towers on top, the right is the high point. The scramble I took starts on the right side. My route snaked up so I looked back often to memorize the route down. Easy scramble and fun. Some exposure which might unnerve the people with a fear of heights.

The Laguna Meadows Trail is closed because a giant rock took out the switchbacks. No signs at the start of the trail notifing the hikers. I mentioned that to the Ranger and she'll take care of it. I went straight to the South Rim because the NE Rim Trail appears to also be closed. There is a sign saying that the closure is 1.5 miles from the junction (around NE 3 campsite). The views from the rim were great and it was a nice hike. In at 7:30 and out before 3.

I'm off to Guadalupe Peak NP, then Carlsbad Caverns and White Sands. I throughly enjoyed Big Bend. The river, desert, and mountains. Even the rain! Although hiking in the desert with an umbrella was kinda weird. Thanks for all the advice everyone. It was a big help.

People regularly hike in Washington with umbrellas. When I saw this I went out and bought a couple Golite umbrellas
