I am in the stages of planning a visit to BIBE from Feb 21-25.

Do any of you regulars know if I will have problems getting a permit at any of the Chisos Mtns sites during this time period?

I'm hoping it's too early for the Spring Breakers that show up a few weeks later.

Too early for Spring Break. February is a wonderful month to visit.

Shouldn't be a problem in February from what I've heard.  There's been a few debates here as to which of the Chisos sites are "best".  SW4 and NE4 are usually near the top of the list.
This thread has a few comments, as do others.

Thanks guys, that does put my mind at ease a bit.

I'm used to the permit process at the Grand Canyon which involves faxing a itinerary (and 2 alternate itineraries) four months in advance, then receiving your permit in the mail.

This business of checking in at BIBE and hoping for the best has me a bit antsy.  But I guess 300,000 annual visitors versus 5 million does change the availability of campsites :)

I feel your pain. On the 22nd, I will put in my request for a trailhead permit and overnight camping permits for a 10-day (as planned) backpacking trek in Yosemite. With alternate dates (which would simply be a shorter trek) and alternate trailheads (a longer trek). And the trip is scheduled for July.

My wife will be joining me for the trip, but she's not so much the tent camper.  She's probably only good for 1 night in the tent, so the other nights at BIBE will be at the Chisos Mountain Lodge.  If it were just me, I'd tent camp the entire stay.

We plan on doing day hikes from the lodge for the other days while in the park.

Late February can be pretty busy;  people want to avoid the Breakers but don't want to wait until April because it's gettin hot.
The link is for visitation stats:

If you can't get a room in the basin, next nearest is Study Butte.  I'd call soon.

For the Lodge, call early and often.  Rooms often get cancelled or released.

Thanks for the tips.  I'll start calling today for the Chisos Mtn Lodge.

Edit:  Wife called the reservations number for the lodge, and Feb 22nd (Fri) is booked.  We may just move the trip back a few days and bypass the weekend crowds.

Edit #2:  The only 3 nights the lodge had consecutive was Feb 11-12-13.  Luckily, not a problem for either of us to change our vacation time at work, so we switched to that week.  Trying to talk the wife into tent camping the night of the 10th and the 14th.  Wish me luck.  :)

Yeah, good luck on spending Valentine's night in a tent.  :rolling:

I'd suggest a night at the Gage Motel in Marathon. Stay in the old unit.

My wife reeeeeaaalllly liked the room we got in the new unit at the Gage.  Only cost twice as much as the old unit. :icon_eek:

I think this is an excellent suggestion. They have a nice restaurant too that's a bit pricey, but I'm sure your lady is worth it. You have to give her a nice experience so there will be many return trips to follow.  :ranger:

Wow, that was a big spike last March.... almost double that of previous years on the chart.
