"This is Texas - Hike Friendly Damnit".

MORE than you will ever want to know, there will be a test on Friday regarding this.  Study Hard.  Those that don't pass have to swab the toidys in the Basin during July.

I did not know we even had an official state cooking implement, much less that it was cast iron dutch oven.

Shane, you should be the official state...something!?!?

I'm ready for the test. Bring it on!

Very rarely do I get someone not respond whether hiking, driving, running thru the grocery, etc. But then I've always lived in the South. Grew up where when you met a car on a 2 lane you always at least raised a finger or two (not the middle) in a wave.

"[Howard Cosell]"A veritable cornucopia of information"[/Cosell]"

On occasion we encounter what may be considered seemingly trivial, but actually useless information.

Isn't it interesting how so many of our State "official" things revolve around food?

That is a first for me also. Everyone I've ran across has always been really cool. But I think I would have stopped and spoken a little louder until I got a response of some kind.

I would've just let them pass.  You can't force people to be friendly.  Plus, I can still recall some guy at work years ago who was upset because I didn't respond with enough enthusiasm to his "How ya doin?" as we passed in the hallway.  He launched into a short lecture about how I should be more friendly.  It didn't inspire me to be more friendly to him at all.

Amen! I can't stand it when customers give me that "you should smile, blah, blah" First of all, my silly face has a smile on it 99% of the time, and God forbid I'm feeling a headache or something, and I get that 1 old guy that thinks he's being funny and says that crap to me!

I find this unusual too.  Everytime I've encountered folks on the trail, I at least get a good "hello" and usually even exchange some brief comments about the trail, weather, wildlife, etc...  I've also shared back country camp sites with some really interesting folks.  One of the friendlier couples was a husband/wife in their late 50's who came down to the Bend every year to spend a month living out of their conversion van. They were from Connecticut, so not all Yanks are guilty.  This was the same trip when I got sick from eating at Santa Elena and the husband kept telling me of good cures for the "Sulfa burps" the following day.  We also once shared a Gravel Pit site with a hippy type who was living in his El Camino. He practically lived with us the week we were there; cooking, eating, hot springing, and smoking with us just like an old friend.

I'm happy to report that everyone that we encountered on this most recent forey into BIBE was very friendly and most wanted to stop and yack on the trail.  There were a lot of Germans there this year, and it was not a "tour bus".  They were all individuals.  My hiking buddy questioned as to why all the Germans would be there when they have the alps to hike in?
