lost mine trail or window???
« on: March 03, 2016, 10:35:42 AM »
Looking for an easy 4-6 mile round trip hike while at BB.  Staying at lodge that night and heading out the next day to do the OML.  Just wanting something for the afternoon , not too hard with lots of scenery.   Which one should we do- Window or Lost Mine Trail?

Normally I would say LMT but if you are doing the OML then the big views of Juniper canyon from the LMT are similar to what you will see on the Juniper Canyon trail so maybe the Window which will give you views west and out the window.  If you do the Window, make sure to take the short side trip up Oak spring trail up to the ridge for a great view west.
temperatures exceed 100 degrees F
minimum 1 gallon water per person/day
no shade, no water

Gilbert's promontory is about 4 hours. If you want scenery...

If you don't mind driving out of the basin, Cattail Falls is great as is the Chimneys trail.  Both have great scenery and cool things to see at the end of the trail.

Lost Mine in the basin, but as previously stated you'll get similar views on the OML heading in/out of the basin. I'll second Cattail Falls outside of the basin, but I'd say Mule Ears over Chimneys. Maybe Grapevine Hills, also outside of the basin?

I would second Grapevine Hills.   I've hiked a number of game trails along the east side  ridgeline and there are some nice views there.
Having decent gear is nice, but wildlife photography is knowing your subject and getting lucky, and I love getting lucky.

Lost Mine is uphill almost all the way (except for a very short and very slight downhill patch) to the ridge, then downhill for the return. Window trail is downhill all they way, then uphill on the return. That may or not may be relevant to your decision. In any event I'll second the motion for Cattail Falls that would be my first choice over either. Also you can stop for a short visit at Sam Nail ranch before proceeding to Cattail Falls.
For every complex problem there is a solution that is simple, obvious, and wrong.

Ditto on Grapevine Hills.   LMT and the Window have similar views, rocks, vegetation, etc.  Grapevine Hills would be a good contrast...
