Pumping water through The Window???
« on: March 19, 2007, 09:41:01 PM »
Three friends and I visited BIBE over spring break and we had a great time. This was my friends' first visit (and probably not their last) and my third. I took them on all of the hikes with awesome views, so The Window was on our list. I knew that it had not rained in The Basin for a while (3 weeks?) so I was not expecting any water to be running out of The Window. But much to our surprise, there was a small stream pouring down the rocks and over the cliff!
Now I don't want to sound like a skeptic, but I couldn't help but think that the water might be pumped through The Window. The trail crosses a pipe line several times and the first several times it crosses the creek bed, it was dry. Then with about 1/4 mile left of the trail, water is all of a sudden running! Is there a spring that I am not aware of? Could NPS be doing this to impress hikers over spring break?
I would hope that this is not true and I really want someone to prove me wrong or provide me with an explanation please!!

The pipe is the basin domestic water supply pumped from Oak Spring. The window is the low point of the basin so all drainage goes there. There might be a spring but more likely you are seeing the end result of a large area being drained by gravity. The basin is no different than any other place...it has ground water.

While I understand that most of the water in The Basin drains out of The Window, I just didn't understand why all of the way down the trail, there was no water in the creek until the canyon narrows and then all of a sudden, "BAM", there is a running stream.

It was beautiful I must say!!

the water reaches impermeable rock at the point you start to see it again. before you see it, it's still there, but just under the gravel. if the water can seep lower through the table, it will. it won't show up on the surface until it can't go down anymore

The last I heard is that there's this wily old ranger who's been pumping water up from the Rio Grande and channeling it to flow over to the window pour-off to impress visitors.  I heard it's being done all by man power as well.  I think he created some kind of pump from a stationary bike.  The location of this "pump house" is hidden....

At one point there is even a cut off valve in a black box, that is what gave it away for me.  I dont care either way.

I could tell you Muse, but I'd have to kill you.  The rangers swore me on penalty of death if I ever disclosed the location.   :icon_mrgreen:

I found the pump place by locating the hovering UFO's and walking until directly under them.   :willynilly:

I was hiking cross country and kept seeing a biker way up ahead of me, but he didn't seem to be going anywhere. I thought the sun and solitude had gotten to me and I was halucinating. But when I finally topped the ridge and saw him just riding his butt off and hooked up to this pipeline,  I asked him what in tarnation he was doing. He explained that riding the bike pump this month was his pennance for not coming to Big Bend in the last 6 months. Sure am glad I make it out there every couple of months!! I'm not about to ride a bicycle!! Let that be a lesson to each of you-get your butts out to Big Bend more often or you'll be riding the bike pump!

Holy smokes,,,, Do you think that maybe he can tap into the Hot Spring. It would help regulate the water temp up there....
