Was wondering if anyone has any tips on which backcountry sites are the best that are on the rim (south or NE)? We are going to be adding a day onto the OML to spend some time out on the rim and take a load off. Sounds like SE3 is a good spot from what I have picked up on?
Ideally, I am hoping to use the recommendations here to make a list of the sites we prefer in order, in the event our top choice is booked. We will be arriving on Wednesday AM and camping the Rim on Friday, so hopefully that will give us a good chance to land our top site.
Side Question: Anyone have any good run-ins with wildlife out on the rim? Would love to see a bearů
Here is an old thread (http://www.bigbendchat.com/portal/forum/hiking-the-mountains-of-big-bend/favourite-high-chisos-backcountry-campsite-poll/) with SW3 and NE4 being most preferred.
That being said, don't discount SE 2,3,4 as nice with great views close by and SW4 is the closest to the highest point on the Rim and the composting toilet is very close by too. :icon_biggrin:
Least favorite probably SW2
For what it's worth, here are the number of permit-days for the "Rim" Campsites in the past 27 months or so.
NE-1 (C) Northeast Rim 95
NE-2 (C) Northeast Rim 79
NE-3 (C) Northeast Rim 124
NE-4 (C) Northeast Rim 135
NE-5 (C) Northeast Rim 38
SE-1 (C) Southeast Rim 193
SE-2 (C) Southeast Rim 156
SE-3 (C) Southeast Rim 142
SE-4 (C) Southeast Rim 106
SW-2 (C) Southwest Rim 182
SW-3 (C) Southwest Rim 362
SW-4 (C) Southwest Rim 457
Thanks guy. Looks like we are going to shoot for NE4 and then SW3. Hopefully we can get one of the two spots!
