Toll Mountain 1 vs. Emory Peak 1-Rim Update?
« on: April 05, 2007, 08:28:22 PM »
If you've camped at either Toll Mountain 1 or Emory Peak 1, would you please share what you liked most, or least, about the sites?

If you've been up into the Chisos recently, do you have any suggestions or comments not listed in recent trip reports?

I'm tentatively planning 3 days/2 Nights in the Chisos this month, hoping to hike up Laguna Meadows to a South Rim site, and catch a sunset and sunrise on the Rim.

Then, I'm hoping to take Boot Canyon Trail, summit Emory Peak, and then catch another sunset and sunrise at either TM-1 or EP-1, and head out after sunrise.

Thanks is advance for your comments.

My two buddies and I camped at EP1 in October.  Its a large site with reasonably good views of the sunset and good spots for 2 or 3 tents.  It made sense for us as a good spot to stop for our first night of two in the Chisos after hiking up the Pinnacles that day.  You can get there early and relieve your back, set camp, and have plenty of time to explore Emory Peak and surrounding areas unemcumbered by your heavy packs.  The only negative for me was the poor condition of EP trail after leaving Boot Canyon Trail.  It's very badly eroded and relatively steep.  Not the most desireable combination for an old clumsy guy with a bad knee and heavy pack.  On the other hand, I know that you're well equipped for much worse so I strongly reccomend it.

Both Toll Mountain and Emory Peak campsites are great.  I have to correct Ray, however, in that the EP campsite is not able to view the sunset, but the sunrise.  You have a fantastic view of Boot Canyon and the SouthEast desert and into Mexico from the EP campsite.  Although you can't see the sunset from EP, it certainly casts some awesome shadows on the desert floor.   It is a large campsite and very private.

Toll Mountain is equally as fantastic, although not as large.  You have an absolutely stunning view of the Basin, Window, and of course an amazing sunset.  It is also private and you have your own "thinking rock" overloooking the Pinnacles and the Basin below you.

I'll have to say, having camped at both sites several times, TM is probably my favorite of the two, but then I'm very partial to sunsets.  Note: the compost toilet is just a hop, skip and jump from TM.
