Boot Canyon Spring - Any Status please
« on: July 03, 2012, 12:58:00 PM »
I know that we have been geeting some water in the area. Has anyone confirmed that the spring at Boot Canyon is reliable to stock-up before heading into the South Rim?

There was water coming out of the pipe a month ago, slow trickle though.  There was a ton of water along the BC Trail to the rim.
WATER, It does a body good.

Cool   :eusa_clap: I really want to lighten my load on the egress towards the South Rim. If I can limit the amount of water (thinking 5L) I carry up the Pinnacle trail, make it past the Gap and could stock-up in Boot Canyon for the remainder of the trip. Does this sound like a good approach for an laet July/Early August trip?

That's what I would do.  NPS won't approve.   :eusa_whistle:

I have more than once been told there is no water in Boot Canyon and to leave what there is for the wildlife, only to get up there and find all manner of water in the pools above the spring, including in some historic drought years.  I now always count on being able to get water out of the pools.  Just make sure you carry a filter or purification drops or tablets.

Happy July 4th!   :103:
temperatures exceed 100 degrees F
minimum 1 gallon water per person/day
no shade, no water

And always remember, just because that water is coming out of a pipe doesn't mean it's clean! Treat the Boot Spring water the same as you would water from the pools.

No worries, I have no plans for doing the Montezuma two-step because of unsafe water. Taking my trusty MSR  filter and some Clorox in a dropper as a second stage clean.

Infosec,
I usually take 3 liters of water on the way up to the south rim. Then I refill in the canyon. There has always been plenty of water up there along the way to the rim. I think you'll be surprised by the availability. I just use chemicals to treat mine but the added filter you mentioned taking will definitely clear up the water. Have a great trip!
