How Does This Year Sound--So Far?
« on: September 12, 2011, 08:16:28 PM »
OK, a little latitude to gloat a bit here.

Here is my year--so far:

January--Big Bend with my Bro; did the shoulder of Carter, Casa Grande, entire rim and in a separate trip Emory

March--brought whole Fam (me, wife, 6 kids) to BBRSP, did Fresno Canyon Overlook etc; then to BBNP, did Lost Mine, Emory

April--took a buddy and hiked Guadalupe Peak at night (we had sunrise up there); then down and to BBNP, Casa Grande; then to BBRSP

June--brought 6 kids to BBNP--did Casa Grande; heat drove us away (104 in Basin!); went to Balmorrhea for day; then Davis Mountains

July 4 weekend--(Here's where things get fuzzy--too many trips I guess)--went with Lance Snead and 3 kids to South Colony Lakes and Humboldt Peak in Sangre de Christos

July--Lance Snead and I go to Willow Lake in Sangre de Christos

July--Me, my Bro and wife go to Vail Music Festival, and also climb 14ers Sherman, Grays and Torreys and Bierstadt E Ridge

August--Big trip with Lance Snead and Bro and 3 kids to Cali; 2 days in Yose (North Dome and Tioga Peak); then North Lake to South Lake loop through Lamarck Col; Evo Basin, Muir Pass, Dusy Basin; total trip miles/gain about 58 and 17,000; also went to Hoover Dam

September 2-6--took Son to Sand Creek Lakes in Sangre de Christos in CO; Tijeras Peak, etc

September 9-11--took oldest daughter to CO--Democrat, Cameron and Bross in Mosquitos; Pike's Peak; Garden of the Gods and Hermit Peak near Las Vegas NM

Upcoming weekend--Arizona--North Kaibab Trail and Humphreys Peak (although if anyone has better suggestions for what to hike in Arizona, I'm all ears.

Also plan on taking more trips further south in Oct through the end of year; want to spend about 4 days in the Truchas Peaks, NM (though they appeared to already have a bunch of snow this weekend); want to do a bikepacking trip in BBRSP with curator Barrett Durst; want to take the 2 little ones (5 and 6) to Guad or BB

So?  Whadyathink?

I'm pretty exhausted just reading it, but incredibly jealous too!  I'm anxious to hear about your upcoming trip to the Truchas.  I've penciled that in for next summer.

So?  Whadyathink?

I wonder how you can have so much time off?  And I wish I could have that much off too!  :icon_mrgreen:

I hate you, in the greenest most jealous with envy sort of way. Can I come hang out with you next year?

You bet!

My trips can be a little nutty though.  Example, I have a deposition in Phoenix on Monday.  I am flying into Phoenix Sat night at 10; drive directly to teh North Rim and start down the trail around 4 with a headlamp; turn around 5 miles and 3k' down around sunrise and head up; Get to the top around 10; drive to flagstaff; start up Mt. Humphreys about 2 p.m.; arrive on summit in time for sunset; hike down and collapse in a hotel.

Say 'hi' to Roaring Springs for me.  :icon_mrgreen:
I enjoyed crashing out on a picnic table there in May '07.  :icon_cool:
Think I set my personal record for water consumed in one day.  :eusa_whistle:

Wow, your year (not even completed yet...) is more big trips than I've taken in the past 10 years.  You set an awfully high bar, sir!

High for me as well, but I plan on trying to out do it next year.  But, right now, I'm too tired to think about next year!

May I recommend to all of you a book recommended to me by Lance and I think recomemnded to him by QS--Born to Run.  It has changed my thinking about a lot of things.  One is that I plan to hike the GC and the first part of Humphreys in my Vibram 5 toes.

Wow, and I was proud of my 5 trips to the park in the past year...
Ah Big Bend, we will soon return to reacquaint ourselves in our ritual of blood, exhaustion and dehydration. How can we resist the temptation to strip ourselves of the maladies of civilization?

I run in them every week day, alternating with my "Keens Tarhgee 2" w/ pack on weekends. The Book, and the Vibrams have changed my life. I never get tired, ask Shelley.
QS

I'm just about finished reading the book and it is indeed a very good read. I'm intrigued enough to consider trying a pair of VFF myself. What version do you run in QS? I'm more of a walker/hiker than a runner per se but I figure I can walk in a running style VFF and then transition to a faster pace as I get more into shape.
  Thanks!

Thanks QS and steelfrog! I may have to go try on a pair somewhere. I wear a size 11 regular shoe but according to the Vibram web site, I need a size 39 based on my foot length. Not many size 39 VFFs available. Maybe I'll go see Muse and try on the size 40 VFFs.
  Thanks again!

Guys: With socks or without? The Treks look like the kangaroo hide would be kinda warm on the feet...especially without socks. Maybe I'm wrong on that.
  Thanks for any info!
