Latest Water Report for Boott Spring?
« on: February 28, 2011, 07:26:42 AM »
I'm planning to do the Outer Mountain Loop next week (March 5) and was wondering if there was any water in Boot Spring in the Chisos.

I'll be cacheing water at Homer Wilson, but I wouldn't mind carrying less water if there was some up there.

Also, I'm guessing Fresno Creek is running, but please let me know if my guess is correct.  :crossedfingers:

Thanks,
Steve

It hasn't rained in months, so I wouldn't expect to find any in the Chisos Mountains. Upper Juniper Spring is a possibility but i wouldn't bet my life on it. A recent trip report said Fresno Creek was flowing at the Dodson Trail.

I was planning to ask that question myself.  We'll be there Wednesday through Sunday of this week.

My son and I will be there Tuesday of next week too. It will be our first trip together in at least 18 years. We are both psyched. I just hope that it won't be too warm.

A friend was there last weekend and said there was water at Boot.
Wake me when it's time to go.

Has anyone heard anything or have any first hand knowledge about Dominquez Spring?

FYI - Upper Juniper Spring is probably reliable but like Jeff said, don't bet your life on it and many people fail to find the actual spring itself (which is very small only 2' long and 1' wide).  Follow the metal pipe up the slope from the cement ruins to the spring below the granite boulder.
Fresno Creek is always reliable but I would not count on anything else this year.   TWWG

When I have hiked the outer mountain loop I just assume that there is no water at Boot Springs.  That way I am not dissappointed.

I'm not sure how this would help a South Rim hike, but since you asked, Mule Ear Spring had plenty of flowing water on Friday Oct 28th. It was my first visit so I couldn't compare it to normal flow, however there were several deep pools and the water was flowing enough to make noise that could be heard well before it was in sight.

Fresno Creek is flowing downstream from the Dodson Trail. Best spots are about 250 yards downstream where the creek bends into a small canyon. It is not flowing at or above the trail. We did not hike by Dodson or Juniper Spgs.
