Any word yet regarding the capture/killing of this year's animal?
Wake me when it's time to go.

Interesting Juan. I guess I never think about that.

You know. To be honest.  This has been somewhat of a blessing to me. Last November. The family and I were hiking the New Sublet Trail.  I guess I kind of got lost in my thoughts when my wife said, "Hey look, mountain lion tracks!" I kind of blew it off and said, "Yup, they're out here alright," unimpressed as my 4 year old is walking through the sand about 20ft behind me.  I'm not giving it a second thought.  That is, until I got to my car and hollered out to him to get in the car, quickly, as a chill shivered up my spine.   He wasn't moving fast enough for me, so I scooped him up and put him in his car seat.   I just suddenly got this creepy urge to do it.  The damn thing was likely watching us the whole time.

Beware.

I found a place that has macetes for $5.  TYhey are unsharpened (but good steel) so you have to sharpen them yourself.  Also, the handle should be removed and superglued back on, including in the screw holes, and the handle then wrapped in duct tape,  Also, the scabbard it comes with should be wrapped in duct tape and you are good to go!

I don't know about a machete, but you should, at the very least, keep your senses about you.

No, seriously--I just bought 4 of them.  As much off-trail stuff as we do, they come in VERY handy.  Well, i haven't used them yet, but I can't wait to!  Sure beats just pushing through the brambles and stickers.  Everything's dead anyway so it's not like you would be hurting anything.

I smell it, too. We probably need a thread about historic/abandoned trails in the Big Bend...  :eusa_whistle:

It's not over yet for this poor family.  He's back in the hospital...

This bums me.  Definately not a "gift."

Current Park Conditions:
Due to recent mountain lion activity, the Window Trail, Lost Mine Trail, Pinnacles, Boulder Meadow, and Juniper Flat campsites are closed. Please follow lion safety precautions. Children are discouraged from hiking in the Basin. Due to bear activity, Glenn Springs 1 and 2, and Robber's Roost campsites are closed. Due to continuing drought conditions, everyone is asked to voluntarily conserve water.

Has there been a bear incident as well?

I am wondering if general food scarcity is driving most of this. I had read somewhere that the bears will eat sotol and other plant roots when food is scarce. Maybe the bears are eating the dying vegetation at the lower altitudes. Nice to see from the Report that the Park got ~0.2" rain overnight in the Basin.

Yes, however to see these flora take peek growth means a waiting time of at least 90 days, before we can start seeing some green.

Now, very probably this little soul of a kid is starting to get the first stages of Trichinosis, which is just terrible. Mountain lions carry Trinchinella, and it is a whole chapter in nightmares for his parents. Chills go down my spine, as I write this.
Stay thirsty, my friends.

Yesterday, a park ranger at Panther Junction told me the lion has not been captured yet and she's thinking the young lion was very hungry and that the whole ecosystem has been severely stressed by the drought.  The rain we got yesterday will help.
