They were charged with a State Jail Felony - it's above misdemeanors (your initials on the back of the portables or the trashcan at the trailhead like someone mentioned) but it's the lowest of the felonies.

They can receive from 180 days to 2 years in jail and a max $10,000 fine.

Thank you for this clarification.  Seems reasonable.

"A San Marcos police detective saw the photo and recognized “CA$H” and “Truck” as the nicknames used by Baird and Agawereh, respectively."

Couple of smooth operators right there...

Apparently the gal is (er, was, after this stunt) a substitute teacher in the Hays County ISD.

Never assume that the bad guys are smart.
Leave "quit" at the car.  Embrace the trail as your friend.  Expect to enjoy yourself, and to be amazed.

I always assume people defacing landmarks are idiots. Haven't been wrong yet.

Surprised they didn't post selfies on their facebook pages while doing it.
Having decent gear is nice, but wildlife photography is knowing your subject and getting lucky, and I love getting lucky.

Not surprising. Not many people are willing to listen to a bunch of rude, overprivileged loud mouths for 60 dollars an eight hour day.

Never assume that the bad guys are smart.

Jails and prisons are full of folks who are far less smart than they thought. It's a basic character flaw in being unable to think things through and understand the consequences of stupid behavior.
