we are leaving  austin tues oct 10 at 200 pm .choice one, 290 to junction pick up 10 .choice two 35, south to 46 west to 10 . now that 10 is 80 mph it might be faster( choice two) though probaly longer.

definately 290! No question it's faster and WAY MORE SCENIC and relaxing!

290 is the more direct route, and it's a pretty drive through the hill country. I-10 is about 120 miles from downtown Austin via 290. Make sure you stop in Johnson City for Whittington Beef Jerky!

I'm pretty sure that 290 to Junction would be a lot faster and better drive.  It is definitely much more direct as someone previously said.

I am late to chime in here...but I agree with all.
One thing you might consider that I do occasionaly is take FM 479 North (it's about 7 miles west of Harper).  It goes through Noxville, but don't expect a town.  It eventually turns west and runs into 2169.  You can take that to Segovia (on IH 10)...then cruise.

479 has some great roller coaster hills - and the beauty is it only adds a little bit to the trip...less than 15 minutes...but it's different and a nice twist.
